Few companies can claim to have created a new style of game. Bullfrog - the company behind Populous, Theme Park, Syndicate and Magic Carpet - seem to find it difficult stopping.
Bullfrog Productions was established in 1987 by Peter Molyneux and Les Edgar, who had previously worked together producing accountancy and database packages for the Amiga. Fusion, the company's first release, caused few ripples, but Populous, the game that followed, was seen as the first God game, leading the way not only for follow-ups by Bullfrog themselves, but also for Mega-lo-Mania, Civilization and a host of others.
Firm relations had built up between Bullfrog and US giant Electronic Arts right from the early days when EA were the only company willing to risk distributing such a new style game as Populous. In 1995 Electronic Arts bought the company, but indulge Bullfrog with a huge amount of creative freedom. Despite this freedom, Peter Molyneux, co-founder and the designer of Populous, Theme Park and Dungeon Keeper, found the increasing amount of time that day-to-day management took frustrating, especially as it prevented him from working as much as he liked on new designs. In 1997 he left the company to found Lionhead Studios.
